NADA art fair Miami Basel

Yesterday, New Art Dealer’s Alliance fair (NADA) opened its doors to a long list of top collectors and gallery directors that included Jay JoplingTodd Levin and Lucy Mitchell-Innes. The stampede of eager art lovers cleared-out the booths that started the day filled with contemporary art from talented rising artists from around the world. The fair, now in its seventh year, is celebrating 80 of the world’s top budding galleries selected from 30 countries.

This year NADA has relocated from its previous location at the Ice Palace to The Deauville Beach Resort, a location that boasts a colorful history – The Deauville headlined the Beatles in 1964 and once played host to a number of celebrity guests including Frank Sinatra. Now, during the week of Art Basel Miami Beach, The Deauville is showcasing a new generation of emmerging talent. Infact, the whirling patterned carpets and dazzling chandeliers, reminiscent of days gone by, served as a kitsch backdrop to the exhibition of the super-new and edgy. The energy of the grand old Resort rubbed-off on fair-goers, collectors and exhibitors who all seemed more than pleased with the new location.

There is no doubt, however, that the main cause for smiles amongst the exhibiting staff were the sales. Many galleries cleared-out their booths within the first few hours of opening – Francois rude, Nicelle Beauchene and Rental Gallery and were tempted to pack-up and relax by the pool located only feet from the exhibits.

We spoke with staff at Kim Light/Lightbox Gallery. The Constructivist inspired sculptural works by Los Angeles artist David Hendren were proving very popular with clients – seven smalls boxes containing mirrors reflecting faces from within had sold out by the end of the VIP preview that took place in the morning.

The Room of Sublime Wallpaper by the Brooklyn-based artist Ellen Harvey, with a price tag of $65,000 was one of the more expensive works on offer at yesterday’s opening.  When we spoke with the gallery representative the work had not sold but we were informed that there had been interest from a number of museums. The large installation takes the form of a room with wooden walls lined with newspaper which, when approached, appears to contain a salon-style hanging of landscape paintings that seem to move. Upon entering the room it becomes clear that the “paintings” are in fact angled mirrors reflecting the hidden painted walls of the room and the illusion becomes even more shattered by the intrusion of the viewer’s reflection. While The Room of Sublime Wallpaper waited to be plucked up and transported to a museum, a number of drawings by Harvey depicting the bloody martyrdom of Saint Sebastien copied from older, celebrated paintings, had been selling quickly even though they were tucked- away behind the main exhibit.

A wall of White Columns “Legendary Xerox Editions”

The modest prices on the much anticipated works, booths expressed that many of the artists exhibited hold long waiting lists filled with potential buyers, encouraged impulse buying on many pieces. This trend was especially clear at the White Columns booth where passers-by could make purchases on many levels – Gavin Brown’s writings were being sold for $20 for signed copy and Bob Nickas’ exhibition scrap book, labeled as an “Essential!” were being sold at speed for $20. White Columns, New York’s oldest alternative art space, is a not-for-profit gallery that has helped expose over 250 artists to a wider audience over the past 37 years – in order to do this they have become pros at raising funds and used the fair as an excuse to exhibit their ‘legendary xerox editions’ as the “Perfect Holiday Gift.” Many of the editions, which include pieces by Ann Craven, Anne Collier and Rita Ackermann, were sold by mid-day and were running out fast.  Another stocking-filler that was selling like hot cakes on offer at the White Columns Booth were Artists on their bicycles New York, a 2010 calender made by Swiss Institute.

Chilean artist Sandra Vasquez de la Horra represented by the German Gallery Rupert PFAB – opportunity to show off these works on paper to a keen American audience who were pocketing the works speedily as the day progressed. Works by Puerto Rican artist Angel Otero, who won the Annenberg Fellowship, were also extremely popular with collectors. At prices ranging from $5,000 to $15,000,the Chicago-based Kavi Gupta Gallery were sold out of the Otero’s gold works early in the day.

NADA Art Fair Coverage 2009

December 7th 09, 8:38 | Adam BryceAgathe Snow, Art Basel, NADA Art Fair

For the last day of the Art Basel festivities, yesterday saw us float through the ballrooms of the historic Deauville Beach Resort in North Miami Beach for NADA Art Fair 2009. After reading the line up for the fair we were convinced that NADA would be our pick and although it was much smaller than we expected the show was at a very high standard.

Showing works from galleries such as SUNDAY LES, White Columns, Country Club and Pool Gallery we saw some familiar works from Agathe Snow, Rita Ackermann and Nate Lowman, but we also got introduced to some great new works from artists we were not so familiar with, which is always exciting and I guess is the fundamental reason behind these fairs. Hence, NADA, standing for New Art Dealers Association. Also on offer was a fantastic selection of books and magazines; Whitehot Magazine, Moon Milk by Ryan McGinley, Morel Books and Journal magazine.

The Swiss Institute gallery had a perfect idea to sell limited edition prints from artists, some x50 and some one-off’s all under the thousand dollar mark. All were sold out and they were busy.

Hear Felipe Lamoglia's Afro-Cuban Jazz Project at the Deauville on Thursday

Welcome to blogs.miaminewtimes.com

felipe_about.jpgSouth Florida’s small but tight jazz scene has usually been recognized out of town for its Afro-Cuban influences. This Thursday night provides an opportunity to hear one of the greatest local proponents of that sound, Felipe Lamoglia. The noted saxophonist, arranger, and composer will take the stage at the Deauville Beach Resort Jazz Club with special guests Ernesto Simpson and Armando Gola. Percussionist Simpson should bring some funk, pop, and R&B influences to the proceedings. Meanwhile, Gola’s nimble fingers on bass has scored him a past Grammy nomination.

The intimate venue might reach its event horizon trying to contain what promises to be an amped-up evening of straight up Afro-Cuban jazz in the hand of some very adept musicians. Check out a video of Lamoglia at the Van Dyke after the jump.

Felipe Lamoglia’s Cuban Project. 9 p.m. Thursday, June 24. The Deauville Beach Resort Jazz Club, 6701 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. Tickets cost $10. 305-332-2623; kccproductions.com

"Exactly what we were hoping for"
5 of 5 starsReviewed May 21, 2013

We were only staying over one night prior to a cruise. Did not want a busy street front location. Wanted to be right on the beach, not across the road. This is an old hotel in a grand way. Large spacious foyer with bar area. We asked for a higher room with beachfront view. It was a very little bit extra. Very nice room, large balcony with head-on ocean view. It was also quiet. The hotel has an outdoor on-site private swimming pool, large lounging area and a bar and barbecue service for lunch. Perfect. A gate opens to a walkway running along the beach-side if you want to walk or run. The beach is absolutely lovely and our stay included the use of their own lounge chairs. A small extra charge. Very relaxing stay and wish we had more than one day and an overnight. Restaurants on-site did not appeal to us but across the road and down a short walk is a great restaurant with green awnings. We ate there at their outside tables. Excellent food. Perfect stop-over before our cruise the next day. I would definitely return.

Beautiful when you first arrive in the lobby. The room was big and clean with a comfortable king size bed. Beautiful view of the ocean on our large balcony. Everything is so conveniently located within walking distance. The staff were very attentive and quick to respond to any needs. Pool was nice and there was a DJ too. It was so enjoyable we are going to stay there again and it has only been a few weeks. Definetly recommend this place. S. Teel

This is my 4th visit to this hotel. We love because of the serine beauty of the ocean! if you are looking for that great relaxing vacation this is it. They have beautiful ocean view rooms, comfortable beds and very clean bathrooms. The hotel is so spacious with a huge pool and lots of lounging chairs and a GYM. The area is very quite without the noise of people walking the streets and loud cars all night. All you hear is the sound of the ocean! The food was wonderful and staff were extremely helpful and courteous.

I am not talking a few select people, I am talking about Yahaira Torres and team; Marta Cotarelo, Glenn Addis, Set Up Team and restaurant management. Yahaira Torres and team operates truly as a team and made it very clear that they were committed to doing whatever it took to make our event a success. Its not often I work with hotels and have a consisted dedicated contact for the entire 3 days. I felt well taken care of and all request were meet with a smile. Any hotel that places this high a priority on service deserves our business again. I have copied my manager on this message and also let her know verbally how great it was to work with your staff at the Deauville Beach Resort, Miami Beach, FL. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Deauville Beach Resort is almost perfect. Before booking I was very nervous because there are plenty of pleasant reviews and many poor reviews. I booked here for one week in April. The weather was amazing. We arrived at the resort at 1245pm and our room was not ready so we got wristbands to hang out by the pool and bar area which makes this resort a plus! By 2pm we were settled into our room. Carolina did a fantastic job checking us in, although we booked a king bed we got two beds. We were on the 16th floor with a newly renovated. Great view & clean. Being here for a week everyone made us feel at home. I did not want to leave. DaLida and Luciana by the bar were awesome!! Customer service was great! The music by the tiki bar and dj saturday night was very fun. Carlos & Karina were great front desk agents that I encountered when I had a request. The Cafe down on the lower level had delicious meals and awesome staff.

He was very curious and helpful with our questions..he made us feel at ease when we had to wait and did everything he could to get us in our room early with no extra fees! Chris answered any questions we had and made us feel at excited about our stay..hotel is beautiful and if the rest of the staff is as nice as Chris I can't wait to interact with every single one..5 stars!!!

Had a wonderful exprience for my birthday in February 2013. View from 12th floor is amazing. Wilie Acosta in Security was extremely helpful with finding great restaurants and nightly entertainment) Had a wonderful waitress who served us our lunch out on the beach. Only bad thing that we found was the price for parking ...$30.00 per night was a bit much. I plan on going back this coming week and can not wait to get there.

"“Great place to stay with a large group”"
5 of 5 starsReviewed March 11, 2013

Stayed here for a couple days with a large group - I was very satisfied with the amenities and spaciousness of the rooms. It was a wonderful experience for me and my friends. The service was great, the front desk was extremely helpful and patient. Pool and beach were very nice...loved the hot tub!! Only downside is room service took quite a while to bring things to our rooms, or sometimes did not bring our requests at all.

"Good Times”"

My stay was good, the staff was accomodating. They had great showers, food, the pool was awesome, so was the view. The lobby is nice and big, and so are the rooms. The only things I didn't like so much was the meticulous nature of the staff, they wouldn't let anything slide. In addition, the room's air conditioning was either too strong or too weak..

"Pleasant Stay"
5 of 5 starsReviewed February 5, 2013

We were wondering how it was going to be here after reading several negative reviews. We were pleasantly surprised and not disappointed. The accomodations here are comfortable and clean. We had a nice view from our (standard) room and I really liked the walk-in closet. I saw no hours posted anywhere for the fitness center though. The pool area was very nice and in general there are plenty of places to sit. Of course the beach is so convenient and inviting. We both agreed we would definitely stay here again.
One glitch was with the concierge. We had made a reservation with a deposit for a taxi to take us to the airport. It was not there at the requested time. When we came down then they called for it and said it would be 10 mintues. Why make a reservation then? When the transportation did finally arrive, we found out there were other people going with us. If we would have known that was the case, we could have just taken the airport shuttle then.

To the staff of the Deauville: I just wanted to say thank you very much for a job well done. You made my life very easy this week...which I am extremely grateful for. Everyone in my group was very impressed by the food and the service. Yahaira, Gabriel and Aramis (the bartender at the pool in the evenings) were especially fantastic.

My husband surprised me with a weekend get a way for our anniversary. Upon checking in we were given a room that we were not satisfied with. I called the front desk to complain about it and in a matter of minutes Claudio (Customer Service Manager) was knocking on our door. He gave us a tour of a better room and we were given the option to either stay where we were or change to the other room. He was very professional and attentive to our needs. Our room was great! The view was amazing! The beach breath taking. It was a wonderful weekend. I am so looking forward to returning. I highly recommend this resort.

5 of 5 starsReviewed January 19, 2013

I booked this trip on Hotwire without knowing the name of the hotel. As soon as I saw Deauville Beach Resort, I came to Trip Advisor and was...horrified. With no refunds i was stuck, almost to the point of eating the $700 and finding another place to stay. We decided we would give it a go and had very low expectations. What a pleasant surprise!!! We arrived about noon for a 4pm check-in. No problem parking in the garage 1/2 a block away. They checked our bags and gave us a resort pass so that we could use the pool and beach. We walked past the pool which appeared to be really nice. The Tiki bar was open and hopping. We went straight to the beach where a pleasant young lady got us 2 beach chairs that were included in the resort fee. Another young lady appeared soon after and kept us in drinks all afternoon. We checked in at 4pm with no hassles. The young lady at the desk was pleasant and helpful. We were on the 9th floor. The room was old no doubt. It wad been recently updated, but some of the outlets didnt work. The bathroom was clean. The shower rod had a little rust on it, but that was all i could find wrong with the room. I didn't experience any of the issues that others have said about the staff or bad rooms etc. For the money, you cant beat the location. it aint the ritz, but its not Motel 6 either.

Room Tip: The 9th floor is all i know and appeared to all be nice

My friends and I recently went to a wedding in Florida and decided to take a road trip to Miami for a couple of days we got a great rate on the room at the Deauville after a friend recommended it for Value for money the only down side to the room was that it was very basic but i suppose the view from the room most certainly underpinned that, we stayed on the 11th Floor and the views where awesome it was a 5 minute taxi ride to South beech and there where plenty of local bars and fast food joints in the area. I have recommended to other friends to stay here the room was clean the staff where friendly and the bar off to the side of the lobby had all the drinks that we could ask for. Cant wait for my next stay in Miami i will be staying here again. Thanks Deauville Beach Resort for a great 2 nights stay

Before we came, we read the reviews, here's what we encountered: hotel is old and some rooms are not renovated yet. You not gonna like them, unless you are on a budget. First, we went to standard oceanfront room on a 9th floor. Didnt like it. With the help of the manager Claudio Ruiz, who was personally showing us the available rooms, we upgraded to a better room on a 16th floor(upgrade will cost you $30-$50 a day). That room was very good!! Spacious, renovated, enough closet space, nice balcony with a chairs, all new bathroom, nice king size bed-comfortable! Location is great(try Norman's grill-yummy!) Beach and pool are right there. Very friendly stuff! Good gym, beautiful lobby. We found the manager of the hotel, Claudio Ruiz,to be very helpfull and accomodating!! Overall, nice stay if you get the renovated rooom.

Then we got our room for three nights. The room was exactly as in the pictures! We are satisfied!
Room is beautiful and we like the colors: grey, blue and cream!
The only thing that we would to have is a makeup mirror in the bathroom.

I guess we were lucky and got an updated room because the room was fine, the bed was comfortable and we even had a postcard view of the beach out our widow. The restaurant was overpriced but we still had a good Cuban sandwich. I recommend going over across the street to one of several restaurants. For breakfast I highly recommend going to the lower level where the beach access is, going out the front door to the street and immediately to your left built into the wall of the hotel is a little Cuban bakery. Very nice to get a pastry and coffee and head on to the beach. The beach is gorgeous and you can walk for miles. You get 2 beach chairs. The pool is in rough shape with lots of paint chips, but I still went for a swim. The Jacuzzi was nice and hot. The ti-ki hut people were very nice. I really liked having Walgreens across the street, very convenient, and liked the beach boardwalk. I would come back, especially for the price I paid. Stayed November 2012, traveled with friends

This is a hotel that could use a makeover, but if you want new, you probably are willing to spend several hundred plus a night more. The hotel next door was charging $750 per night. The hotel is right on the beach. Yes the rooms and entrance areas are dated, but were clean. If you want a beach vacation, this is a great place. You can take the bus to south beach, our walk several miles in either direction along the walkway or the beach itself. I would not rent a car. Instead, take a cab from the airport - rental cars are expensive in Miami. My wife and I stayed here two nights and enjoyed are time here. There are restaurants within walking distance. Room Tip: ask for the beach front room , traveled as a couple

Thank you! Booked hotel without knowing an awful lot but felt it was good value for money. We are pleased with our experience but have some recommendations..... - this hotel is a bus ride from South Beach but the bus is very cheap 2 dollars to go anywhere on that route the S bus takes you to South Beach one way and aventura mall the other way (well worth an evening visit.) - the pool and beach are excellent and you will not be disapointed. - there is a supermarket directly opposite that is good value for money and vital for drinks, crisps and souviners etc. - there are some fanatics resturants Normans is very good an American bar and grill opposite which also offers excellent value for money. - there is an excellent pizza shop opposite also that gives another option for cheap eating as south beach is very expensive so by eating near the hotel first you can then get the bus to south beach for drinks. - I reccomend upgrading or booking a superior ocean front room, we upgraded whilst there and the room was beautiful with a balcony looking out over the beach and sea..... Incredible view. The other rooms don't have balconies although all are well air conditioned. - the hotel offers tours through a third party company that are very good and the best price around. Overall we had a superb stay and were very happy......great location if you don't mind getting the bus to south beach for a night out (they are cheap and run all night). Very clean with free pool and beach towels. Ignore bad reviews this hotel is as described online, it's no 5 star but a definite three and the superior ocean front rooms are incredible well worth paying extra for.

Overall we had a superb stay and were very happy......great location if you don't mind getting the bus to south beach for a night out (they are cheap and run all night).
Very clean with free pool and beach towels.
Ignore bad reviews this hotel is as described online, it's no 5 star but a definite three and the superior ocean front rooms are incredible well worth paying extra for it.

“Very nice location, outstanding employees”
4 of 5 starsReviewed September 1, 2012 I stayed at the Deauville Beach Resort for a couple of months and I enjoy every minute of my time. The service and staff were outstanding. The staff was very friendly, when I need extra service the housekeeping staff is always willing the assist me. The front desk staff always polite to me and help me with any concern I have. The hotel is always kept clean. Security officers are always patrolling so you feel safe all the time. The noise level is very good so you know you going to have a quiet sleep. My next stay in Miami will surely be the Deauville Beach Resort. Just want to take this time to thank all the staff, securities and managers for a great job they're doing on a daily basis at the beautiful Deauville Beach Resort

“Decent hotel”

The oceanfront room on the 14th floor was very nice, beautiful view (though the loud AC on the balcony is a bit annoying and it is too hot to sit out there in the morning sun). The beach and the water were absolutely amazing. The pool also very good, though when it's crowded there isn't anywhere to sit and the service is spotty. Loved the Spanish/dance music they played, with a live DJ on the weekend. They close the pool at sunset and we managed to sneak in for a quick dip but got kicked out about 10 minutes later.
